Are you sure that you are watching High Definition television?

A poll of 9,500 viewers found that whilst over 55% of UK households have purchased HD products, only 58% of that group had connected the television to the necessary player or box. The poll discovered that 30% of this same group thought they could watch HD programmes without any additional products.

A BVA spokesman said, "In the run up to the World Cup even more people will be looking to invest in High Definition, but they need to be aware that an HD TV alone does not mean that they are watching content in high definition. You are only getting the HD experience if you are watching content via a bolt-on high definition set top box, a Blu-ray player or a PS3 console."

In order to watch programmes in high definition, viewers will need to subscribe to a provider such as Sky or Virgin or buy a Freeview or Freesat set top box.

There are currently three HD channels available to Freeview viewers, three for Freesat viewers, 41 for Sky Digital customers and 12 available via Virgin Media. *

Almost every World Cup match will be broadcast in HD this summer.
