The RDI certification is a government backed scheme launched in 2006 to provide qualified, trusted engineers to consumers who need aerial upgrading in order to receive Digital Television. The aim of the scheme is to create a gold standard for the aerial industry and to help drive out ‘cowboy’ operators.
Digital Television reception requires higher skill levels to both install and diagnose potential problems. Under the RDI scheme engineers must obtain an NVQ Level 2 in Electrical and Electronics servicing, be qualified and comply with health and safety when working at heights, undertake criminal records disclosure and have public liability insurance.
The RDI qualification will raise standards and improve the overall perception of an industry that, at times, has suffered from a poor image.
Digital UK, the organisation responsible for leading the UK digital TV switchover, recommends that if consumers need work done on an aerial ahead of the Digital Switchover, they should only use contractors who are Registered Digital Installers and who are the only ones allowed to display the Digital tick logo. This ensures that the engineer has met a high standard and that their work is guaranteed for 12 months.
