What to look for in a television shop, from one that has been on the same street since 1983

Quick answer
Moss of Bath is an independent television and audio specialist at 45 St James’s Parade, trading since 1962. We have a showroom you can see televisions working in, our own service department, and our own installation teams. Five-year warranty on televisions, (exclusions apply) and free delivery within ten miles of Bath on orders over £100.
What happens when you ring us
A person answers. Usually within a few rings, in working hours, from the shop.
No menu system, no queue, no chatbot asking you to describe your problem in a text box before it offers to pass you to an agent. If the person who picks up cannot answer your question, they will walk across the showroom to someone who can, or take a number and ring you back the same day.
This sounds like a small thing. It is not. A large part of what customers tell us they value is not the television at all; it is knowing that the number on the receipt reaches somebody who can help, three years after the sale.
The number is 01225 331 441.
What you can see in a showroom that you cannot see anywhere else
Picture quality does not survive a product photograph, and it does not survive a review score either.
The two questions people genuinely have are how a set will look in a room like theirs, and how big is too big. Neither can be answered on a screen. A 65-inch OLED in a bright south-facing Georgian drawing room behaves very differently from the same panel in a dim north-facing snug, and the only useful way to find out is to stand in front of both.
Bring a photograph of the room and the wall measurements. Ten minutes with those beats two hours of reading.
We would also rather show you the cheaper set that suits your room than the expensive one that does not. That is easier to do face to face, which is part of why the showroom still exists.
Installing a television in a Georgian or listed property
This is the part of buying a television in Bath that nobody outside Bath thinks about.
A large share of the city’s housing is Georgian, much of it listed or in a conservation area. That means lath and plaster walls, chimney breasts that are not flat, no stud where you want one, and sockets in the wrong place. Chasing cables into a listed wall is not always permitted. Fixing a 30kg television to lath and plaster without knowing what is behind it is not safe.
Our installation teams work in these buildings every week. What usually comes up:
- Whether the wall will take the weight, and which bracket suits solid stone against a stud partition
- Routing power and HDMI without cutting original plasterwork
- Where the aerial or satellite feed is, and whether it can reach the new position
- When listed building consent is genuinely needed, and when it is not
If you are in a flat in a converted townhouse, the freeholder’s consent is often the real constraint rather than the building. Worth checking before you order anything.
What do delivery and installation cost?
Delivery is free within ten miles of the showroom on anything over £100, and one of our own team brings it. We do not use couriers. Orders usually go out within 24 hours, morning (9am to 1pm) or afternoon (1pm to 5pm), and we will narrow the window where we can. Order before midday and we will try for the same day.
That free delivery is drop-off. If you would like it set up and working before we leave, there are two levels of installation.
Standard installation, £69.50. We unpack it, take the packaging away, connect it to your aerial or dish, tune it in, get it onto your wi-fi, connect a soundbar or recorder if you have one, update the software, and show you how it works.
Full installation with smart setup, £99.50. Our most popular option. Everything above, plus the apps: iPlayer, ITVX, Netflix and the rest. Have your passwords to hand.
Add £20 for televisions of 50 inches and over, which need two people. Removing your old set starts at £20 and we recycle it under WEEE. Outside the ten miles, ring 01225 331 441 for a quote; we travel further than people expect.
Whichever you choose, you get a time and we keep to it. If something changes we ring before the slot, not after. Full terms are on the home delivery page.
What happens after you buy
Most televisions we sell carry a five-year warranty, (exclusions apply) and the terms and conditions set out exactly what that means.
The practical difference is who you deal with. A fault in year three means ringing the shop, and in most cases one of our own engineers looks at it. We have run an in-house service department for decades. It is a genuinely unusual thing to still have, and it is the reason we can tell you honestly whether a repair is worth doing.
It also means the advice you get before the sale is shaped by watching what actually fails afterwards.
Are you more expensive than buying online?
Less often than people assume. Check before you decide.
On premium televisions in particular, the price you find online and the price we quote are frequently the same, and sometimes ours is lower. Manufacturer promotions and cashback offers run through independent retailers as well, and there are periods when the better deal on a specific model is genuinely here rather than on a website.
The comparison worth making is like for like. Our price includes free delivery within ten miles, brought by a member of our team rather than a courier, and a five-year warranty rather than the usual twelve months. Installation and disposal are priced separately and set out above, so you can see exactly what you are buying.
Are we the right shop for you?
Price is not what we lead on, even when ours is competitive.
What we are actually offering is the demonstration before you choose, the installation done properly, the engineer who comes out in year three, and a number that reaches a person. If those things matter to you, we are worth a visit.
If the only thing that matters is the number on the receipt, and the rest is noise to you, that is a perfectly reasonable way to buy a television. We are just built for the other kind of customer.

Frequently asked questions
Do you price match? Bring us the model and the price. We are independent, so it is a conversation rather than a policy card, and we are competitive more often than people expect.
Do you take away my old television? Yes, as part of an installation. Disposal starts at £20 per item and we recycle under WEEE regulations.
Can you set up a television I bought elsewhere? Yes. Installation is a service in its own right, not something conditional on buying the set from us.
Do you repair televisions you did not sell? Yes. Our service department takes in work regardless of where the set came from, and we will tell you honestly when a repair is not viable.
Which brands do you stock? The current list is on our brands page. Being independent means we choose what we stock rather than being told.
Do you do more than televisions? Hi-fi, home cinema, smart home and networking, satellite and aerial work, and commercial installations.
How long should a television last? Ten years is reasonable for the panel. The smart software usually gives up first, and apps get withdrawn from older sets while the picture is still perfect. Why Can’t I Get iPlayer on My Panasonic TV?
Thinking about a new television? Come and see some in-store, or call 01225 331 441 and let us know what you are looking for. A real person will answer!
